With a team of over 200 volunteers around the United States, WeVote is driven by a shared passion for democracy. Our ever-growing team of talented people who show up to make a difference is responsible for a variety of operations—including software engineering, graphic design, marketing, donor relations, analytics, and so much more.

We surveyed our volunteers in February to find out why they enjoy contributing to WeVote and came up with four top reasons.

Reason #1: Turning Anxiety Into Action

WeVote’s mission is to increase voter turnout by creating a digital platform that educates voters and transforms voting into a social activity. In a country where voter turnout continues to be a cause for concern, many of our volunteers said they are driven by the opportunity to support this meaningful cause.

“I get to channel my generalized anxiety about the fate of democracy into actually doing something about it,” says grant writer Robert O.

Reason #2: A Nationwide Team

WeVote brings together volunteers from 32 states (including Washington, DC). We work remotely and connect via online platforms. The ability to collaborate with individuals from different places makes volunteering at WeVote an amazing experience.

Program manager Dennis W. shares, “I like working with people who are living across the US. It’s nice meeting new people and learning about where they live.”

Meanwhile, UI/UX designer Thomas D. notes that WeVote’s diversity greatly enhances its mission: “By having a team as diversified as this…we’re able to shine a light on how to solve a multitude of problems when it comes to creating a platform that not only educates the voter, but allows them to help their desired candidate(s).”

Reason #3: Opportunities for Growth and Learning

For a lot of volunteers, WeVote is not just a place where their talents are put to use. It’s also where they can learn new things and develop their skillsets.

“I have learned about the work others are doing and how to apply my skills to a different setting,” grant writer Erin W. explains. “It’s such a gift to be learning in a new space while still trucking away in my career.”

Reason #4: Constant, Exciting Innovation

WeVote is divided into many different teams, each with its own projects and tasks. For example, the engineering team is responsible for developing and maintaining the WeVote platform. Meanwhile, the business development team oversees outreach efforts aimed at political candidates and other public figures. Then there are the blog, newsletter, graphics, video, and social media teams, which create content that helps promote WeVote and drive civic engagement.

As you can see, our organization has a lot going on behind the scenes. Anyone looking for new challenges to tackle can easily find one around every corner.

Software engineer Nette L. quips, “It’s never boring! There’s always a bug (or 5) to fix.”
