Voters in more than a dozen states, including key battleground states and states with important local races, will head to the polls in August. Unlike the spring and early summer primaries that kicked off the 2026 cycle, August represents the final stretch of the primary season. Some of these contests are expected to be highly competitive. Florida, Wisconsin, and Michigan are among the states holding gubernatorial primaries in August. August primaries also include a wide mix of federal, state, county, and local seats. That means down-ballot races on issues like housing, transportation, and public safety will also be on the ballot. Many of these races help shape local budgets and policies affecting schools, housing development, and community planning.
